Gayner takes a lead

Cockwood parent Gayner Andrews decided to show her support for Hands Up by signing the petition and emailing to her local MP Richard Younger-Ross. Her MP responded by saying he is backing the campaign and has applied for a debate in the House of Commons about fair funding for schools. Well done Gayner and thanks Richard for your support.

Gayner's email and Richard Younger-Ross' response

Dear Richard Younger-Ross,

According to Government funding, the education of every child in Devon
is worth £375 less than the national average, this amounts to £30,000
per annum for Cockwood School and that cannot be fair. Schools face
similar costs wherever they are. A petition has been posted by Hands Up
for Fairer School Funding, a campaign launched by schools in Devon to
persuade Government to tackle the inequalities in funding for schools
and end the post-code lottery that affects young people in many parts
of England.

As our local MP,I would like to know what you are doing in order to
take this forward.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Gayner Andrews

I have over the last month applied for a debate in the House on this issue which is not a new one. The problem is the grant system put in place by the Conservatives which is little amended by this Government. There is however hope as pressure has led to a Government review of the way grants are calculated. I attended a F40 Group conference on this issue two weeks ago and fully support the DCC this year for fairer funding. With the review in place there is hope of change at last.

Yours,
Richard Younger-Ross MP
